About online payment limits
There is a maximum daily amount of €20,000 / £20,000 that customers can transfer to payees through the 365 phone and online banking services.
The limit per working day (in other words not Saturdays, Sundays or bank holidays) includes most types of payments, but there are exceptions. See below for these.
Whether you use the maximum limit or set a lower one yourself, it is important to always make sure that you have enough in your account to cover any payments you make. Read about how long it takes to send money and what the cut-off times are.
What is my maximum limit for online payment?
The maximum combined limit you can transfer through the 365 phone and online banking services to existing payees per working day is €20,000 / £20,000. This limit covers certain other payment types as well as existing payees (and new payees after 48 hours – see below). It’s important to note that your daily limit will reduce each time you make a payment, whether it's online, through phone banking or if you pay by bank using open banking. And remember, €20,000 / £20,000 is your combined payment limit.
The limit for new payees is lower
When you add a new payee or payees, there is a period of up to 48 hours when the maximum combined limit you can pay them per working day is €1,000 / £1,000. This is to protect customers from fraud.
Need to make a payment higher than €1,000 / £1,000 to a new payee?
Whenever possible, add the new payee to your profile at least 48 hours before you plan to make your payment. If you cannot do this, get in touch using one of the numbers below. If there are options for you to make a larger payment in a shorter time frame, we will outline these when you call.
How do I set a lower limit?
€20,000 / £20,000 is the maximum daily amount. You can change the settings to lower your payment limit at any time in the payments section of the app or on 365 online through your browser. You can also check what your current limit is set at.
Remember: make sure you have enough in your account to cover all your payments on the date that you schedule a future-dated payment. Each future-dated payment counts as part of any limit you have in place for payments on that date.
Does my limit include all my payments?
No, certain types of payments do not count as part of your daily limit. These are:
- Direct debits or standing orders
- Credit or debit card payments
- Transfers between your own BoI accounts
Types of payments that are included in your limit
The payment types that are covered include sending money within or outside Ireland or the UK, and paying a bill including future-dated payments. Future-dated payments will affect your maximum limit on the date the payment is scheduled.
If you need an alternative way to pay
If sending money online is not an option for you, InterPay (Republic of Ireland) or telegraphic transfer (Northern Ireland and Great Britain) may be used as an alternative.
To send money through InterPay, you’ll need to complete a form and call in to one of our branches. You can read here about specific requirements for different countries.
For more information on using telegraphic transfers in NI/GB, please visit a branch and we’ll be happy to help you with this.
